Summer Sonshine is held during the four Mondays in June for those youth entering 6th grade through completing 8th grade. Summer Sonhine is a service based day event where the youth are put into small groups and each Monday morning the different groups go to different organizations around the community and volunteer at their respective location. We then gather them all for lunch followed by an afternoon social activity. Summer Sonshine is based on the upcoming Gospel readings for that week and the youths relate their service projects to the readings for that upcoming Sunday's Mass. It is a great way to keep in touch with youth activities during the summer!
A typical day at Summer Sonshine looks like this:
9:00 am – Drop off youth at the youth room. Students begin with a Gospel tie in for the upcoming Sunday Gospel. This will be done in a creative and hands on way.
9:30 am – The youths go to a different service project each week in small group; for example, Sister BJ’s Pantry, Nursing Home Bingo and the Regional Food Bank.
Noon – Lunch is in large group prepared by parents.
1:00 pm – Every Monday has a different fun activity than the other weeks. Laser Quest, the OKC Zoo, and the Oklahoma Science Museum are some of the fun places we have gone to in the past.
4:00 pm – Large group in the gym. How did each group live out the Gospel message through their work today? This will also be done in a creative way. This is an important part of the day. Please do not pick up your youth before the end.
5:00 pm – Pick up your youth until the next week.
