Spiritual Direction

What is Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual Direction is a one-to-one relationship that helps one recognize God’s unique and personal call and one’s response to that call.

Spiritual Direction is a ministry and Spiritual Directors consider this ministry to be a vocation. In practice, good spiritual direction involves regular (e.g., weekly, bi-weekly, monthly) meetings between two persons.

Henri Nouwen defined Spiritual Direction as “a relationship initiated by a spiritual seeker who finds a mature person of faith willing to pray and respond with wisdom and understanding to questions about how to live spiritually in a world of ambiguity and distraction.” For Nouwen, a spiritual director simply was someone who talks to you and prays with you about your life. He said that “wisdom and direction” emerge from a spiritual dialogue and relationship with two people of faith.

In short, it's an opportunity to let someone mentor you in developing a relationship with God. Visit the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City website for more information.

Who seeks Spiritual Direction?

People seek spiritual direction for a variety of reasons; some are trying to discern what God is calling them to, some are questioning their faith, and some are participating in the Retreat in Daily Life—a set of “spiritual exercises” where we learn to weave our own life narrative into the life story of Jesus Christ in such a way that both become more vivid and interconnected.

Who Can Provide Spiritual Direction?

A Spiritual Director is an individual who has had extensive training in the ministry of Spiritual Direction. The Directors continue their training with ongoing education, meet with a supervisor, participate in regular sessions with their Spiritual Director, and join professional organizations. They view the time spent in Direction to be a privilege and a commitment to your spiritual journey.

What is the Cost and Commitment?

Usually, confidential sessions are one hour, once a month. A stipend of $40-60 per session is paid to the Director. No one is refused services due to inability to pay. Please contact the parish office for financial help.
